“I don’t love you anymore!” Jane said softly.  He could see her tremble with every word.  “You should just leave. Please.”
Andrew stretched out his hand with the intent of stroking her face and whipping the tears from her cheek.  Jane knew this was coming and could not stand the thought of his touch. She stood up from the couch on which they were seated.
“You heard me; I don’t want to be with you.”
Every word stung.  Andrew’s heart was aching.  He dropped his head into his hands.  Even though he knew that what Jane was saying was a lie, it still killed him to hear it.  He knew that she was being selfless, and sacrificing her happiness for what she thought was right.
Andrew’s ex wife had re-entered his life, carrying their first child.  Jane fully understood what life was like growing up without a father, coming from a broken home.  She couldn’t stand by and let that loneliness and pain happen to another child if she could help it.
Andrew admired the strength it took for Jane to commit this noble deed but still did not want it to be true.  He walked over to her, and held her waist.
“I know why you are doing this, and I have told you so many times things will work out.  This is not the answer.” Andrew stared into her beautiful green eyes.  “But since it is what you want…”  He trailed off; he was giving in to defeat as nothing he could say at that moment would change her mind.  So, instead he closed his eyes and moved closer to whisper “I love you.”
In a moment Jane kissed him and began to walk away.
Andrew stood there, unable to move and with unbearable pain in his heart, he watched her walk out of his life.
